Jonathan Somer 2024-2025

Institution of PhD:
Technion – Israel Institute of Technology
Academic Discipline of PhD:
Electrical Engineering
PhD Advisor/s:
Prof. Shie Mannor & Prof. Uri Alon
Dissertation Topic:
Understanding and Treating Cancer Using Data-Driven Dynamics Estimation and Control

Jonathan’s research integrates concepts from machine learning, dynamical systems, and control theory to develop next-generation cancer therapies. Jonathan has pioneered a method for inferring temporal tissue dynamics from a single biopsy. This groundbreaking work provides a foundation for understanding multicellular dynamics within the tumor microenvironment and designing precise treatments that modulate these dynamics. Jonathan’s interdisciplinary work is mentored by Prof. Shie Mannor from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technion, and Prof. Uri Alon from the Faculty of Molecular Cell Biology at the Weizmann Institute.

Jonathan lives in Tel-Aviv with his wife, Adi, and baby boy, Lavi. His lifelong enthusiasm for technology and medicine is complemented by roles in various tech startups. His research endeavors began on his first day of medical school, mentored by Prof. Uri Shalit and Dr. Danny Eytan. This work culminated in the publication of five academic papers and the creation of computational models that shaped national policies during the COVID-19 crisis.
