Seminar 2008

PRESS RELEASE

ADAMS FELLOWSHIPS OFFER SPECIAL SUPPLEMENTARY HOLIDAY GIFT TO COMPENSATE FOR THE DROP IN THE DOLLAR’S BUYING POWER IN ISRAEL

On the occasion of the visit of Mr. Marcel Adams to Israel, The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities will host the Adams Seminar for 2008 on Sunday, May 18, 2008, with Professor Ada Yonath of the Weizmann Institute, Academy Member and Israel Prize Laureate, lecturing on “David and Goliath: How Do the Tiny Antibiotics Paralyze the Giant Ribosome?”. This seminar will honor the 10 new recipients of the Adams Fellowships, as well as the 26 who have received the Fellowship since the program began.

At the seminar, Mr. Marcel Adams will announce the special supplementary holiday gift he is giving to all Adams Fellows, to help compensate for the nearly 20 percent drop in the value of the American dollar relative to the shekel. “The purpose of the Adams Fellowship is to identify Israel’s scientific wunderkinds of tomorrow, and to make sure they are comfortable enough to focus on their research, without worrying about money. The dramatic drop in the American dollar’s buying power prompted this one-time gift,” Mr. Adams said. “I call on other philanthropists supporting Israel to join me in helping to cover the gap facing many Israelis and many Israeli institutions relying on American-dollar-based gifts.”

Marcel Adams is the founder of Iberville Developments, a Montreal-based real estate company, and the head of the Adams Family Foundation. The Adams Fellowship Program was established jointly by Mr. Marcel Adams of Montreal, Canada and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities to provide financial assistance to outstanding doctoral students in the exact sciences, mathematics and the life sciences. Since its inception in Spring of 2005, the program has been administered by the Academy and underwritten by Mr. Adams.
