Seminar 2009

PRESS RELEASE

FIFTH CLASS OF ADAMS FELLOWS TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATES AT THE ADAMS SEMINAR FOR 2009

On the occasion of the visit of Mr. Marcel Adams to Israel, The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities will host the Adams Seminar for 2009 on Monday, May 18, 2009, with Academy Member Professor Moty Heiblum of the Weizmann Institute lecturing on “Physics and the Information Revolution”. This seminar will honor the 11 new awardees of the Adams Fellowships, as well as the 36 who have received the Fellowship since the program began.

Adams signed an agreement establishing the Adams Fellowships with the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem in May 2005. Academy President Professor Menahem Yaari describes the agreement as one of the most important documents ever for the future of higher education in Israel.

In establishing the Adams Fellowship Program, Mr. Adams wished “to identify Israel’s scientific wunderkinds of tomorrow and to make sure they are comfortable enough to focus on their research, without worrying about money”. He designed his program to help create a young Israeli cadre of top scholars in the natural sciences, computer science, mathematics and engineering, committed to remaining in Israel and advancing scientific knowledge and research.

The fund is large enough to provide $1 Million annually to outstanding PhD students, covering their full tuition and living expenses throughout four years of study and including funds for attending scientific conferences and workshops abroad. Candidates come from all seven of the research universities of Israel. Adams Fellows are given the opportunity to interact with one another and to form a small science community of their own through initiatives such as lectures by renowned scientists and periodic seminars and conferences. Since its inception, the Adams Fellowships program attained prestige and won much acclaim, becoming the leading fellowship program for doctoral students of the higher education system.

Marcel Adams is the founder of Iberville Developments, a Montreal-based real estate company, and the head of the Adams Family Foundation. Since its inception in the Spring of 2005, the program has been administered by the Academy and underwritten by Mr. Adams.
