Avi Saig is a neurobiologist. He is Head of Research and Development in the Department of Educational Technology in the Davidson Institute of Science Education, which is the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. He specializes in popular science and has over 200 publications in this genre.

Avi received his PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2010. His thesis, “Guiding Principles for Sensory Substitution: From Vision to Touch” was written under the supervision Prof. Ehud Ahissar and Dr. Amos Arieli. His PhD researched the field of sensory substitution, which is the attempt to transform the characteristics of one sensory modality into stimuli of another sensory modality, This has practical implications as a method for alleviating sensory deficits within clinical populations such as the blind and deaf.

This work was a progression from Avi’s MSc in chemistry, which he received in 2004 from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His MSc findings were published in prominent international journals such as Journal of Physical Chemistry, J. Phys, and Chem Solids.

As of 2001, Avi produces and stars in video clips demonstrating scientific experiments that can be performed at home. In addition to his educational work, Avi is also regular contributor to Hebrew Wikipedia.
