Carmel Rothschild is a physicist and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. His is primarily interested in nonlinear optics in small molecules, nano-photonics, organic-electronics and the engineering of thermal radiation.

Since being appointed to his post in 2011, he has been awarded both the Alon Fellowship for New Faculty Members (awarded by the Council for Higher Education of Israel ) and a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant (awarded by the European Community). The Technion likewise recognised his scientific achievements by awarding him a Horev Fellowship for Leaders in Science and Technology. He spent the summer of 2012 as a visiting scientist in the Electrical Engineering Department at MIT.

Before teaching at the Technion, Carmel was hosted by Prof. Marc Baldo as a postdoctoral associate in the Electrical Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). For his postdoctoral research, Carmel received a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, as well as a Bikura Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Carmel completed his PhD at the Technion under the supervision of Prof. Mordechai (Moti) Segev. His research on soliton interactions in nonlocal nonlinear media and his discovery of new phenomena in nonlinear optics were published in a series of papers. While working on his PhD, Carmel mentored young researchers who joined his research group and guided them in their first steps in scientific publication.

Carmel has been published widely in a variety of journals. He has served as a reviewer for Physical  Review Letters, Optics Letters, Optics Express, JOSA B, and Applied Optics, and for the US Israel Binational Science Foundation [BSF] and the German Israeli foundation [GIF].

Carmel is a thesis adviser to several graduate students at the Technion, including Assaf Manor, a 2013–2014 Adams Fellow.
