David Tsivion is a chemist and PhD student at the Weizmann Institute of Science. His thesis “Guided Growth of Horizontal Nanowires” is being written under the supervision of Prof. Ernesto Joselevich.

In his research, David developed the guided growth of horizontal nanowires as a solution to their organization and integration into nanocircuits. In this unique approach, nanowires can grow along specific lattice directions, nanosteps or nanogrooves of a crystal surface, producing perfectly aligned arrays of horizontal nanowires with unprecedented alignment and length. This new approach of “guided growth” paved the way to highly controlled semiconductor structures with many potential applications not available by other means. This approach was recognized as a breakthrough in the field of nanowires, and recently published in the prestigious Science journal.

David is now focused on investigating the self-organization of nanowire patterns via horizontal epitaxil growth from catalyst nanoparticles on singular, vicinal and nanofaceted crystal surfaces and on exploring the integration of surface-directed nanowires into functional systems.

David Tsivion has won the Material Research Society Silver Award for outstanding PhD students, the Prof. Israel Dostrovsky Prize of Excellence and the Israel Chemical Society Prize for an Excellent Graduate Student. As well as publishing in Science, his work has been published in journals such as Nano, The Journal of Physical Chemistry and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
