Dr. Dmitry Batenkov is a Mathematician and postdoctoral fellow at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, primarily interested in computational and theoretical aspects of inverse problems in signal and image processing using algebraic modelling, putting emphasis on accurate recovery of discontinuous features.
He received his PhD in 2014 with the thesis “Algebraic Reconstruction of Geometric Models from Integral Measurements” written under the supervision of Prof. Yosef Yomdin from the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dmitry’s PhD research included finding the solution to the well-known Eckhoff’s problem that had remained open for two decades, which asked for accurate recovery of jump discontinuities of a piecewise-smooth function from its Fourier coefficients. Dmitry’s solution included developing a “decimation method”, which, in turn, has provided a certain approach to the so-called “super-resolution problem”, one of the topics of Dmitry’s current research.
In recognition of these achievements Dmitry was awarded the John F. Kennedy Prize for Academic Excellence and Scientific Accomplishments (awarded by the Feinberg Graduate School of the Weizmann Institute of Science), as well as the Sampling Theory and Applications (SampTA) prize for best student paper 2013 as well as the Adams Fellowship. He was also offered the prestigious Rothschild Postdoctoral Fellowship, but did not accept it for family reasons.
Dmitry received his BSc in 2002 from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, graduating Summa cum Laude. During his studies he has been a member of the Computer Science department Excellency Program (SAMBA), has received the President Excellency prize for 5 consecutive semesters, and has been recognized by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Committee for Education and Culture for his achievements.
Dmitry’s work has been published in prestigious journals including: Inverse Problems, Mathematics of Computation, SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics, and the Abel Symposia. He was also an editor and regular contributor to “XRDS” – the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) quarterly magazine for students. In his spare time he helps developing a community project iClean (http://iclean.org.il) – encouraging people to take personal responsibility choosing a path or area they want to adopt and help keep clean.
