Michael Orlov is a computer scientist and lecturer, serving as Head of the Cyber Operations Program in the Department of Software Engineering at the Sami Shamoon College of Engineering, Israel. His research focuses on evolutionary computation, an interdisciplinary field based in both biology and physics.

In his work, Michael researches ways to automatically improve software modules, using evolutionary computation – evolutionary software improvement. This new approach promises to improve results of state-of-the-art systems intended to solve real-world problems. Locating an algorithmic module with functionality that can be improved with an evolutionarily designed algorithm can tremendously advance the achievements of the system as a whole. Michael has been able to identify some of the key unsolved problems within evolutionary computation and Artificial Intelligence, namely the crucial role of communication between and within evolved artificial systems.

Michael completed his PhD in Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His Thesis “Evolutionary Computation” was written under the supervision of Prof. Moshe Sipper. In his research, Michael designed and implemented a methodology for evolving unrestricted software systems: evolution of Java bytecode [4].

Michael has been published in a variety of scientific publications and conference proceedings, including IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation and Information Processing Letters.
